WELCOME TO PRIMARY 5

LITTER PICK

P5 have been very busy helping keep our school and club grounds tidy. We did our first litter pick and were very surprised as to how much we collected. This will be completed every month by P5. Thanks again to the club who donated 10 new litter picks last year.

HEALTHY BODY/HEALTHY MIND

As part of our topic we have been looking at a range of ways to keep healthy and look after ourselves. We were very lucky to have had a visit from Mairead Mullan who is a Health Care Assistant in A&E and Bobby Dillon who is an Ambulance Care Attendant.

We had a fun filled afternoon full of facts, information and demonstrations about how these two very important jobs are done. We will be trying out a few of these things ourselves so watch our class page. A massive thank you to Mairead and Bobby.

FACT FINDING

Research on Roald Dahl to mark Roald Dahl Day. We are currently reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

NUMERACY IN THE SUN

Mental maths and word building in the sun.

NUMICON

Using Numicon to help with our quick recall of numbers bonds to 20.

LINE OF THE WEEK

Our Line of the Week Award got us a full hour of fun and play at the 4G.

ZOOM CALL TO A DALLAS FIRE STATION

As part of our topic Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Primary 5 had the amazing opportunity to be part of a live Zoom call to Texas!!! We spoke to Paul Donnelly who is a Paramedic/Firefighter from Farmer's Branch Station in Dallas.

We had the opportunity to ask lots of relevant questions and gained so much information. Primary Five got a tour of the fire truck and the ambulance and were amazed at how they all worked and what equipment they carried. Paul's friend even got into his protective gear (which has to take only 45 seconds) and explained each item.

We would like to greatly thank the men for taking the time to organise everything in Dallas so we could avail of this fantastic opportunity in Dunloy.

MATHS WEEK

For Math’s Week we tested Leonardo Di Vincis Vitruvian Man Theory.  He believed that the length of a person’s arm span is equal to their height.  We measured each other and compared the results.  The theory worked for 14 children and did not for 16.  In our evaluation of the task, we looked at how our measurements may not have been accurate for a number of reasons.  Primary 5 are left undecided but had great fun along the way.

DIGITAL ART

The class used Adobe Express to create Halloween Art. Pupils worked in pairs to create their own unique poster.  In order to do this, the children had to explore and use different colours, fonts, pictures and tools for writing. Our work is displayed outside our classroom.

HALLOWEEN FUN IN PRIMARY 5

THRIVE ACADEMY E-SAFETY WORKSHOP

P.5 enjoyed all the activities from the Thrive workshop, on how to stay safe online.

ODD SOCKS DAY

Celebrating our uniqueness, differences and being perfect just the way we are.

ATLAS WORK

Research and Atlas work on America and Ireland, helped us to compare and contrast the two countries.

NUMICON

Primary 5 used Numicon to help understand perimeter.

SNOW DAY

Primary 5 had fun in the snow.

CHARLIE MACKESY VIDEO CALL
WOW!!! What an amazing day our Primary Five class had on Thursday. They received a video call from the one and only Charlie Mackesy and his friend Colm. Charlie is the famous author and illustrator of the book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. This book was on The Sunday Times bestseller list for 100 weeks and has also been made into a wonderful animation which is shown on Christmas Day.
The children had the privilege of meeting his dog Barney, who stole the show. Charlie gave the kids a tour of his studio and he explained the creative process he went through, to produce the final draft of the book.
Charlie celebrated the illustrations and quotes the children had sent to him, which were all inspired by his book. He congratulated everyone on their ‘absolutely spectacular work.’ He especially loved the work from Roise and Bryan.
The quote chosen for the day in Primary Five was 'So Much Beauty We Need to Look After.' This was the perfect quote, as we had a beautiful blanket of snow. Our playground looked like a scene from the animation.
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Charlie and Colm for giving up their precious time to contact us.
Thank you also to Mrs O’Kane for providing such a wonderful topic for the Primary 5 children and for giving them this amazing experience.
